Restoration Ministries  |    home                                                    _______________________________________________________________________ A couple of years ago, I began to tutor some folks in the study of New Testament Greek.  One has continued to stick with it and we continue to plod our way through the First Epistle of John, sweating over tenses and cases, constructing bizarre-looking syntactical diagrams, and having some rich dialogue on what the author is intending in his writings.  What is in this section are some of our notes. To say the least, these have been super-rewarding as God has graciously given us illumination by His Spirit to understand this little epistle better.  Roger Lange has stuck with his Greek studies and is turning into a pretty fair student of the Scriptures.  Hal West joined us a while back and has added to the fun.  I hope the insights you find here are as meaningful to you as they have been to us.  I also pray that your walk with Christ is strengthened thrugh better understanding of His precious word. _________________________________________________________________ New Covenant Language in 1 John  (Introduction 1)  Do the terms that John uses in his letter have any particular significance?  His words point his readers back to the Old Covenant, but are they in support of the Old Covenant? The Commandment: Old or New? (1 John 2:7, 8) Is John confused in saying he writes about an "old" commandment, then calling it a "new" commandment?  What does he mean by these terms?
